The call went out late in the afternoon over reddit for an autonomous leaderless march on the federal court house in Denver. By 8:30 PM 65 people showed up dressed in all black and masked up to voice their frustration over federal occupation of major US cities where protest are happening on a large scale. Protesters gathered on the south side of the federal complex downtown and began to move around to the north side towards the entrance of the federal courthouse. Upon arriving at the court house one protester lit of some large fireworks, which prompted approx 2 dozen riot officers to converge on the front of the courthouse. We had documented earlier during the initial gathering that these riot police were staged 2 blocks over from the federal courthouse in riot gear before the protest had even began. The Bloc abandonded the federal courthouse opting out of a confrontation with police, as it was believed it would only lead to unnecessary arrest. The Bloc began to march through the street towards the 16th Street Mall, upon turning the corner into the mall aglass encased sign was smashed. This is when the call went out "As a Black Man you have my permission to fuck shit up, protest how ever you want!" Cheers erupted in response from the Bloc and this is when the rage began to flow over the 16th Street Mall. The next 6 blocks of the 16th Street Mall saw many corporate owned and bourgeoisie shops vandalized. Windows were smashed out, traffic control devices were relocated to block traffic while others were destroyed to create shields, many businesses were spray painted as well as the stone paved road and corporate "art" structures were vandalized. Targets hit include Target, Starbucks, US Bank, Subway, Mcdonalds, Corner Bakery, Gold Time Jewelery, Jimmy Johns, Giordano's and a couple of extremely gentrified restaurants. After reaching Colfax Ave the Bloc discussed next move and opted to call it in front of the state capitol. They dispersed with no other police contact aside from the initial riot police confrontation in front of the courthouse. No arrest were made from this group how ever another small group was rallied at the capitol and began to march to join this group. Details are unclear but at some point several police vehicles swarmed this small group jumped out and did a snatch and grab on one protester. The main group was only able to get pieces of information related to this event.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the Black Bloc action on 16th Street Mall?
On July 28, 2020, approximately 65 masked protesters in black clothing gathered for an autonomous march on the federal courthouse in Denver. After police moved in with riot gear, the group dispersed and marched to the 16th Street Mall where windows of corporate businesses were broken, including Starbucks, Target, McDonalds, US Bank, and others.
Why did the protest target the 16th Street Mall?
After police confronted the group at the federal courthouse, protesters chose to target corporate businesses on the 16th Street Mall instead of engaging in a direct confrontation that could result in mass arrests. The action was a form of property destruction directed at symbols of corporate power. It was the nearest high value target to send a clear message as 16th street was only 2 blocks away, and the mall began in another 2 blocks.
What was the context for this Denver protest?
The July 2020 protests were part of ongoing nationwide demonstrations demanding justice for Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man killed by Aurora police in 2019, and broader Black Lives Matter protests against police brutality. Initially a protest was called outside the federal courthouse in Denver, but protesters were met with a large force of riot cops. The choice was then made to attack capitalist power structures along the outdoor mall.
How did police respond to the protest?
Police in riot gear were pre-staged before the protest even began. When protesters set off fireworks at the federal courthouse, approximately 4 dozen riot police converged on the area. Once leaving the courthouse polcie assumed the protest had fully disperesed. Later, police conducted a snatch-and-grab arrest of a protester leaving after the action near the State Capitol.
